Lightning strike damages Stanly County road, police say (Oakboro Police Department)

STANLY COUNTY, N.C. — A lightning strike during Wednesday evening’s storms caused significant damage to a Stanly County road, according to the Oakboro Police Department.

Hatley-Burris Road north of Oakboro is closed after lightning struck a tree then went through the roadway causing it to explode, police said in a post to Facebook.

Debris from the road landed on the roof of a nearby home, police said, but no injuries were mentioned.

Power, cable and phone service may also be affected in the area near Trotters Ridge.

Oakboro police said it had no details on how long the road would be closed.
