Video of a blue colour Ola S1 pro electric scooter on fire emerged in Lohegaon area of Pune that may add to fears about battery safety in electric vehicles. At least half a dozen instances of thermal runway have emerged in the last six months including in scooters from Pure EV and Okinawa, but Ola's is the most high profile case till date.

Video of Gwalior based Super Eco's X1 on fire surfaced on social media recently. The company blamed a Bangalore based third party battery vendor for the mishap. SuperEco also supplies the scooter to Sahara Evols, the EV firm of Sahara Group that had made a low key entry in the segment in mid 2019.

With sporadic cases of electric vehicles catching fire coming to the fore, India needs timely regulations to prevent it. Thankfully in AIS 156 it has one of the most stringent tests worldwide. But there is a catch--implementation is shoddy.

Also, since lithium is again a finite source, and though it is recyclable the dependency on a few countries or a single country is going to be challenging and I think the government is also trying to focus on developing cells in India with the existing resources that we have. Hence, battery technology will improve and the density of the battery cells will improve going forward. A lot of companies are working on it and it is a bright future for EVs.
